Deaf School VS Public School
I have noticed that more Deaf people become more successful...when they come from Deaf school... while deaf students who attend public school seem stressed try find their identify..who are they. What kind job fit them the best. Other things I noticed .... students from public school seem have lack of social skills or less athletic.. compare students from deaf school have better social skills and have more opportunity to involved in sports, academic bowls, all others clubs and activity. While students from public school are limited to very few or to none.. but do you know whats so funny...... all deaf student who go to public school that have ASL club... all deaf students are automatically a member of ASL club!. I think they should close all public school or charter school for the deaf... and forced all deaf children go to their deaf school in their state... or MSSD if they dont have deaf school in their state. MSSD(model secondary school for the deaf) should limit them self to accept only students from state with no deaf school first.

I agree with some of what you said. But not entirely true because public schools are varied depending on what kind of deaf programs they offered.
Biggest differences between mainstreaming in public school and deaf classroom public school. Mainstreaming allowed you to go to regular class rather than deaf classrooms. However, mainstreaming gives deaf students an advantage of what deaf school don't have: higher quality of education
Some deaf schools are struggling because some hearing administrators look down upon us or dumbing down deaf education, for example FSDB.
Sorry, your post is too exaggerating for facts.
You said, "I think they should close all public school or charter school for the deaf... and forced all deaf children go to their deaf school in their state... or MSSD if they dont have deaf school in their state. You think??? Really???!!! I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH THIS.
If it wasn't for the law (Public Law 94-142 known as IDEA) passed about a decade ago that give deaf people an option of going to public school, there won't be deaf awareness spreading all over USA. Without mainstreaming school, deaf schools will have serious problems facing more audists.
However, I like the idea of deaf students going to deaf school instead of mainstreaming because it will increase the enrollment numbers, but we need mainstreaming programs for some reasons because they have advantages. For example, what if a deaf student want to sit in same classroom as other hearing students, asking for competition in better grade, asking for intelligent equality?
Aaron, i am not try to exaggerating... i am just speak of my opinion and what i have see... high percent... i am not said its 100 percent right... I have know some people who go to mainstreaming school does sucessful. But, very low number of deaf people have that gift and potential to make through... but do they understand the value of deaf community and deaf history and value of American Sign Language?
Aaron,
Your comment...
"mainstreaming gives deaf students an advantage of what deaf school don't have: higher quality of education"
Are you being so naive? Sadly, the quality of education in mainstream is going downhill so fast. The real reason: Not enough resources for deaf students. Is it exaggerating? No. I work with deaf students in mainstream. One student can not count the number. Astounding! Their quality of education are so low and their social skills are so terrible. They should be in mental institution because of their behaviors. Your comment, "Without mainstreaming school, deaf schools will have serious problems facing more audists." What the heck did you get that idea?? Find the fact about your comment.
I wouldn't say so. Out of my graduate classmates attending programs here, a VERY low number had come from deaf schools, ironic enuff that it is GALLAUDET university here. The majority of deaf graduate students here are from mainstreamed schools. Coincidence?
Also, of deaf adults I had met, who have JOBS, most (most, I didn't say all) are from mainstreamed schools, not deaf schools. Most of deaf clients I worked with were from deaf schools. Coincidence? So I would say, it depends on HOW one want to interpret what they SEE, not considering access to education; locations of schools; motivation of students, parents and teachers to use some variables.

Kids from deaf schools definitely have better social skills and athletic opportunities. As far as academics, it varies. Not all deaf schools have good programs. That is where improvement is needed. Kids from mainstream schools have better opportunity for jobs because they are used to that envrionment and....maybe because on their resume it looks more impressive to hearing employers to see regular public schools rather than ____ school for the deaf. You can see some parts of audism in play. Some states have a very good mainstream programs.
Lastly, many parents rather have their children close by where they can instill family values and closeness compared to years ago, many deaf are not able to be part of their family - they feel left out.
I can see where your perspective is coming from.
Aaron,
I just want to inform you that some of us Deaf do feel funny and think something wrong with that the law (Public Law 94-142 known as IDEA)! Some of us feel that education in mainstreaming public schools are still very weak systems! I hope that I don't hurt your feelings but I just want to let you know our opinions. Thanks. Shawn
Ryan, I respect your opinions. I know things at mainstream school are varied because I know some of my friends left deaf school to go to mainstream because they wanted same quality of hearing education, but I know MOST go to deaf school for social experiences. In fact, we know for sure that deaf school helped them a lot, from both education and social.
ASL Risen,
No feeling hurt. We know that IDEA is flawed because it's weak. However, I know it has a lot of impacts on deaf community as I've said, spreading deaf awareness.
For example, I had met some hearing who happened learned very little ASL and I asked them where they learned. They said it was from their school where they provide deaf education program and ASL class as foriegn class.

Anyway, I came from oral school almost most of my childhood and it wasn't pleasant experiences. I also went to mainstream school. Then I decided to go to MSSD because I lacked social skills which I blame oral ideology.
First of all, I am a public school graduate and I find it very ironic with your blog on Deaf School VS Public School.
First: Education, of course it is prority to everybody in the deaf community! I know there's several flaws, loops, black-hole in BOTH deaf and public school education providing for deaf. There is pretty much pro/cons on this very often debate issues "education"
Secondly: Social Skills are like awesome in deaf school. They learn how to thrive in deaf community, become friends with basically everybody. It also apply to deaf student who are in public education system, BUT there is whole lot of oppunities in public education system as well too. For example I was in Speech and Debate team and I was the FIRST deaf debater in the WHOLE state of Texas! I travel with softball team, parcipated in 4-H livestock show, Livestock Judging Show, oh the list go on and on and I gain WHOLE lot of experience and learning whole lot of what hearing world COULD offer for us [deaf].
I also disagreed with your "theory" of closing down all public school deaf education program and/or charter school for the deaf. It really help the parents of the deaf child to gain their indepence. I met lot of parents who have a deaf child(ren) and they said "It is UP to the child and the parents to decide ON the BEST of the child(ren)" Most deaf child(ren) I met in public education system are like one big social butterfly!
BUT in long run of this very HIGH commonly heated debate "Deaf School VS Public School". Everyone is entitled to their own thoughs and opoions in this. Parents and their child should choose what could be the best for them in their future. I can only image if I am a mother to a deaf child, facing a big DECISION what would be the best for my child's education.
I'm pretty sure that other people out there really feel the same with this issues.
This debate will go on forever.
I am deaf and I go to a mainsteam. I don't like it but I think it has helped me on Englsih grammar.
BUT I may have good English skills but I am not so smart, just an average student, who doesn't have a big ambition to be very successful in life.
I went to a deaf school in primary but left because of better education. It wasn't the best move but I noticed my English grammar is better than most of students who currently go to the deaf school but students before them have greatly skills of English and most of them have deaf parents whereas the current students don't. I, too, have deaf parents.
So what I am saying is that I reckon it's upon parents to ensure their students do well, whether they're deaf or hearing.
However I think I could have been smarter if I didn't have so hard times in mainsteam primary school. And it's the dept of ed's truly respionibliy to provide right education for all the students and they're not doing very for the deaf students.
However I guess the students only can be smart if everybody work.
Too bad not everybody work together.
Oi I truly agree with 'The Critic'.
I am a parent of a deaf child. My son is currently attending mainstream in the 6th grade. He has done well up to this point. The middle school that he is not attention does not support the deaf students. I have been fighting since day one of this school year to get my son the resources outlined in his IEP. After the first 9 weeks of school, I'm now looking to withdrawn my son and move him into a deaf school. The middle school has one TOD in the whole school and she could care less about teaching my son....She once told me that she could not meet with me in regards to my son because she had cheerleaders practice. She is very nonresponsive. The core teachers try hard to assistance but they don't know how to teach deaf kids most of them don't know sign languge. This is so unfair that I have to send my son away to a deaf school to get him the education that he desired. One of my school deaf friend attended 6th grade at the same school. He failed every class with an E every 9 weeks. He failed the SOL standards of Learning and still got passed to the 7th grade. He has now moved on to go to a deaf school...That's crazy. So I'm ready to give the deaf school a try...I want my child be taught by teachers that care whether he gets it or not.
